Dicksonia antarctica, commonly known as the Soft Tree Fern, is a striking, slow-growing fern with a thick, fibrous trunk topped by a crown of large, arching, deep green fronds. Native to Australia, this ancient plant brings a lush, tropical feel to shaded gardens and woodland settings. It thrives in humid conditions and is one of the hardiest tree ferns, capable of withstanding cooler temperatures and light frosts with some protection. Its dramatic, architectural form makes it a stunning focal point in any landscape.
Why we like it
- Elegant, tropical-looking foliage.
- Hardy and tolerant of cooler temperatures.
- Creates excellent canopy cover in shaded areas.
What to know
- Prefers partial to full shade.
- Requires consistently moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil.
- Water the trunk as well as the roots, especially in dry weather.
- Protect the crown from heavy frosts with fleece or mulch.
