Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum', commonly known as the variegated spider plant, is a popular houseplant known for its attractive green and white striped leaves and ease of care. This plant is native to South Africa and is a member of the Asparagaceae family. It is a great option for beginners or those who may not have the greenest thumbs as it is low-maintenance and can tolerate a wide range of conditions. The variegated spider plant is also known for its air-purifying qualities, making it a great addition to any indoor space.

Why We Like It:

  • Easy to care for and low-maintenance, making it great for beginners
  • Attractive green and white striped leaves add visual interest to any space
  • Air-purifying qualities help improve indoor air quality

What to Know:

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
  • Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions
  • Propagate by planting the plantlets that form on the ends of the plant's long stems
  • Spider plants can be sensitive to chemicals in tap water, so consider using distilled water or leaving tap water out overnight to allow the chlorine to evaporate
  • Can be susceptible to spider mites, so be sure to regularly inspect the plant for signs of infestation

Height and Spread:

  • When fully grown, the variegated spider plant can reach a height of around 30 cm (12 in) and a spread of around 60 cm (24 in)
