Juveniles and adults from German breeding
Peruphasma schultei has only been in the terrarium hobby for a few years, as this species was only discovered in 2004 in the border region between Peru and Ecuador. In the following three years, a large number of animals were bred and half of the offspring were released in the area where they were found or sold to insect keepers. This approach had positive effects on the protected area and probably also saved the species from extinction. Within a very short time, P. schultei has become a very common phasmid species. When threatened, the velvet grasshopper can spray a sticky, intensely smelling defensive secretion that causes irritation in the eyes and irritation in mucous membranes and open wounds. Velvet grasshoppers are very easy to keep terrarium animals and are interesting for novices as well as advanced keepers.
