Dryopteris filix-mas, commonly known as the male fern, is a deciduous fern that is native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. It features fronds that can grow up to 150 cm in height, and they are light green in colour, with triangular shaped leaves. The male fern is a popular plant for gardens and landscaping, as it is very hardy and can grow in a wide range of soils and conditions. It prefers moist, shaded areas but can also tolerate drier soils and sunnier positions.
Why we like it:
- Adds a lush, natural look to any garden or landscape
- Hardy and adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions
- Low maintenance, making it an easy choice for beginner gardeners
What to know:
- Plant in well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
- Male ferns benefit from a layer of mulch around their base to help retain moisture and regulate temperature
- The plant may require some pruning to keep it tidy and to remove any damaged or diseased fronds
Height and Spread:
- At maturity, the male fern can reach a height of up to 150 cm and a spread of up to 90 cm.
