The Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is a small, vibrant freshwater fish known for its stunning colors and peaceful nature. With its striking red and blue hues, it is a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts. Origin: Cardinal Tetras originate from the Amazon River basin in South America, primarily found in the waters of Brazil and Colombia. These fish are commonly found in slow-moving streams and tributaries, where they thrive in the densely vegetated areas.

Temperature: Cardinal Tetras thrive in a tropical aquarium environment with an ideal temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C). Maintaining a stable temperature within this range is crucial for their overall health and well-being.

Feeding: Cardinal Tetras are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods. Their diet should include high-quality flake or pellet food designed for tropical fish, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. A diverse diet will help maintain their vibrant colors and ensure their nutritional needs are met.

Water Quality: These fish prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions, with a pH level between 5.5 and 7.0. They are also sensitive to water hardness, so a general hardness (GH) level of 2-6 dH is suitable. Regular water changes and proper filtration are essential to maintain optimal water quality.

Ideal Aquarium Size: To provide a comfortable living space for Cardinal Tetras, it is recommended to have an aquarium with a capacity of at least 20-30 gallons (75-113 liters). A larger tank allows for a stable environment and the ability to create a small school of these beautiful fish, as they are social by nature. Adequate vegetation and hiding places should be provided.

Lifespan: When kept in optimal conditions, Cardinal Tetras can live for up to 3-5 years. Proper care, including maintaining water quality and a balanced diet, can contribute to their longevity.

Community Tank Compatibility: Cardinal Tetras are peaceful and social fish, making them excellent additions to community aquariums. They coexist well with other non-aggressive fish species of similar size and temperament, such as other tetras, rasboras, and peaceful bottom-dwellers like Corydoras catfish.

Breeding: Breeding Cardinal Tetras can be a bit challenging, as they require specific conditions. To encourage breeding, provide soft, acidic water with a slightly lower temperature (around 78°F or 26°C). A separate breeding tank with dense plants and subdued lighting is recommended. Once successful, the female will scatter adhesive eggs among the plants, and the fry can be fed with tiny live or powdered foods.
