The Emerald Green Cory Catfish (Brochis splendens) is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling freshwater fish known for its vibrant green, metallic sheen. It belongs to the Corydoradinae family and thrives in groups, making it a great addition to community tanks. This hardy species is an excellent scavenger, helping to keep the aquarium clean by consuming leftover food. With their social nature and active foraging behavior, they add both beauty and functionality to a well-maintained tank.
Origin:
Native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of the Amazon Basin in South America.
Temperature:
Prefers a temperature range of 22–28°C.
Feeding:
Enjoys a varied diet, including sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables.
Water Quality:
Requires a pH range of 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water (2–15 dGH).
Ideal Aquarium Size:
A minimum tank size of 80 liters with soft substrate, hiding spots, and gentle filtration to mimic their natural habitat.
Lifespan:
Typically lives for 5–7 years with proper care.
Community Tank Compatibility:
Peaceful and social; does well with other small, non-aggressive fish, including tetras, rasboras, and other Corydoras species.
Breeding:
To breed, provide a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water. A high-protein diet and cooler water changes can trigger spawning. The female lays eggs on flat surfaces, and the parents should be removed after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs.
