The Albino Bichir, scientifically known as Polypterus Senegalus Albino, is a fascinating and unique species in the aquarium hobby. This albino variant of the Polypterus Senegalus exhibits a striking pale coloration, contrasting sharply with the darker tones of its non-albino counterparts. Known for their prehistoric appearance, Albino Bichirs possess elongated bodies, adorned with a series of dorsal finlets that run along their back, resembling primitive dragons. They can grow up to 35-40 centimeters in length, making them a sizable presence in any aquarium. Their eyes, often pink or red due to the lack of pigmentation, add to their distinctive appearance. Albino Bichirs are nocturnal and display fascinating behaviors, especially during feeding times. They are relatively hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for experienced aquarium enthusiasts. However, their size and predatory nature require specific care and attention, particularly regarding tank size and tank mates.
Origin: Albino Bichirs are originally derived from the regular Polypterus Senegalus, native to freshwater habitats in Africa, particularly in the Nile River, Senegal River, and other river basins.
Temperature: The ideal temperature for Albino Bichirs is between 26°C to 30°C (78°F to 86°F).
Feeding: Albino Bichirs thrive on a varied diet including meaty foods such as shrimp, small fish, worms, and specially formulated pellets or sticks for carnivorous fish.
Water Quality: These fish prefer a pH level ranging from 6.5 to 7.5 and appreciate moderately soft to slightly hard water.
Ideal Aquarium Size: A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended for an Albino Bichir. The aquarium should have a secure lid (as they can jump), plenty of hiding spaces, and a substrate that won't harm their delicate undersides.
Lifespan: With proper care, Albino Bichirs can live up to 10-15 years in captivity.
Community Tank Compatibility: They are best kept with other large, non-aggressive fish. Smaller fish may be seen as prey due to their predatory nature.
Breeding: Breeding Albino Bichirs is challenging. It requires a large tank, conditioned pairs, and careful monitoring of water conditions. The female lays eggs which the male fertilizes, and the eggs require a specific environment to develop successfully.
