A Brief History
It all started over 50 years ago when Mike and Phil Devitt purchased a house with an acre of land in what is now called the old part of Clondalkin in Co. Dublin. It was originally a Doctors house and practice which came with an acre of land and mature orchard in the back garden.
Phil came from a farming background and decided that she would make the most of the orchard. At first she started to sell the fruit and then she decided to grow other fruit and vegetables and sell them to the local marketplace. She taught herself to propagate and grow plants which she sold to the local neighbours and in the markets. In The long summer evenings Mike would come home from work and help plant and prepare the plants for the next day.
A Hard Working Couple
After a few years as they built up a loyal customer base and expanded their range of plants from vegetables to all kinds of shrubs they decided to open up to the public and so Newlands Garden Centre was born.
As business grew and they realised that they needed a bigger car park and a bigger shop they decided to buy an acre of land next door.
Over the years they both worked tirelessly together to build one of the most well-known and respected garden centres in Ireland. Mike became chairman of the International Garden Centre Association and in 1999 he was instrumental in hosting the International Garden Centre Congress with over 300 garden centre owners from around the globe to come to see what garden centres had to offer in Ireland.
A Passion For Plants and Service
The only reason that Newlands Home and Garden centre has grown and prospered over the years is because of their dedication to quality of plants and to always making sure the customer is looked after, and that is still our ethos to this day.
Even at the age of 86, Phil still serves customers and knows exactly what needs to be done to keep the customers satisfied.

As the next generation of Devitts have now taken over the reins we have helped progress the business even further. With a wonderful 100 seater Cafe and bakery that is now at the heart of our shop as well as our furniture and giftware departments not to mention our pet and aquatic department.
