Habitat Setup
- Enclosure: A 20-gallon tank or 3 ft vivarium is suitable for an adult Leopard Gecko. A secure lid is important to prevent escapes.
- Substrate: Opt for safe substrates like Arcadia Arid Earth or dry coco fibre. Avoid substrates like sand, which can cause impaction if ingested.
- Temperature: Provide a temperature gradient in the tank—85-90°F (29-32°C) on the warm side and approx 75°F (24°C) on the cool side.
- Humidity: Keep the humidity around 30-40%. A humid hide with damp sphagnum moss is essential, especially during shedding.
Diet
- Insects: Feed them live insects like crickets, mealworms, or dubia roaches. Ensure the prey is smaller than the width of the gecko's head.
- Supplements: Dust insects with calcium and vitamin powder to prevent metabolic bone disease.
- Feeding frequency: Young geckos should be fed daily, while adults can be fed every 2-3 days.
Behavior and Handling
- Temperament: Leopard Geckos are docile and can be easily handled, but it’s important to let them get used to your presence before regular handling.
- Shedding: Provide a moist hide to help with shedding. They eat their shed skin for nutritional benefits.
Lighting
- A shadedweller (7%) UV bulb is also needed for appropriate calcium absorption and vitamin D3 synthesis. Ensure they have a day-night cycle with natural or artificial light.
Water
- Always provide fresh water in a shallow dish, and clean it regularly.
