The corn snake, scientifically named Pantherophis guttatus, is a captivating reptile that has captured the hearts of snake enthusiasts with its enchanting colors and docile nature. Originating from North America, these serpents have become popular pets, admired for their striking appearance and relatively easy care requirements.

Appearance: Corn snakes are available in variety of different colours (morphs). They average 3-4 ft in length, although larger individuals are also seen. 

Habitat: Providing an appropriate enclosure is crucial for the well-being of corn snakes. A secure and adequately sized terrarium with hiding spots, branches, and a suitable substrate for burrowing is essential. For hatchling snakes, the Habistat Snake Starter kit is a suitable first vivarium. Adult corn snakes require a minimum of a 4 ft long enclosure. A temperature gradient should be maintained, allowing the snake to thermoregulate by moving between warm and cooler areas.

Temperature: Maintaining the right temperature range is essential. The basking area should be around 85°F to 90°F (29°C to 32°C), while the cooler side of the enclosure should be around 70°F to 75°F (21°C to 24°C). Nighttime temperatures can be slightly cooler.

Feeding: Corn snakes are carnivores, primarily consuming appropriately sized rodents (frozen-thawed). Younger snakes may require smaller prey, while adults can handle larger offerings. Feeding every 5 to 7 days when young and less frequently as they grow older helps maintain their health.

Lifespan: With proper care, corn snakes can live 15 to 20 years or more in captivity. Providing a well-balanced diet, a suitable habitat, and regular health check-ups contribute to their longevity.

Temperament: Renowned for their gentle disposition, corn snakes are often recommended for beginners. They are known to tolerate handling well and rarely exhibit aggressive behavior. Their relatively small size and amiable nature make them a joy to interact with.
