The Farlowella Twig Catfish, scientifically known as Farlowella acus, is a unique and fascinating species in the aquarium hobby, prized for its unusual appearance and peaceful nature. This fish is characterized by its long, slender body, resembling a twig or stick, which is an adaptation for camouflage among plants and driftwood. Typically, it grows to a length of about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches). The body coloration is usually a mottled brown, helping it blend seamlessly with its surroundings. This species has a distinctive elongated snout and is equipped with armor-like scutes along its body, offering protection against predators.
Origin: The Farlowella Twig Catfish is native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of South America, particularly in countries like Venezuela, Colombia, and Brazil. They are often found in densely vegetated waters with plenty of driftwood.
Temperature: The ideal temperature for the Farlowella Twig Catfish is between 24°C and 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
Water Quality: This species prefers a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5, with soft to moderately hard water. They are sensitive to water quality and require a well-maintained tank with good filtration.
Aquarium Size: A minimum tank size of 80 liters is recommended for a single Farlowella Twig Catfish. The aquarium should have plenty of hiding places and surfaces for algae growth, such as driftwood and plants. They are not territorial but do need their own space.
Feeding: Farlowella Twig Catfish are primarily herbivores, feeding on algae and biofilm in the aquarium. Supplementing their diet with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional high-quality flake or pellet food is beneficial.
Lifespan: They can live up to 5-8 years in a well-cared-for aquarium.
Behavior and Personality: Farlowella Twig Catfish are extremely peaceful and shy. They are best kept with small, peaceful fish. They spend most of their time clinging to hard surfaces, camouflaging themselves among plants and wood.
