The Five Banded Barb, scientifically known as Puntius pentazona, is a small and vibrant freshwater fish popular among aquarium enthusiasts. This species typically grows to a size of about 5 cm (2 inches) in length, making it a suitable choice for community aquariums. Its body is slender and slightly compressed laterally, exhibiting a silver to golden color with five distinct black bands that run vertically along its sides. These bands are more pronounced in males, especially during spawning periods. The Five Banded Barb is a peaceful and active swimmer, often seen in groups, which enhances its striking appearance in an aquarium setting.
Origin: The Five Banded Barb is native to Southeast Asia, predominantly found in slow-moving or still waters of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Its natural habitat includes shallow streams, rivers, and floodplains where vegetation is abundant.
Temperature: The ideal temperature for the Five Banded Barb is between 22°C and 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
Water Quality: This species thrives in water with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 and prefers soft to moderately hard water.
Aquarium Size: For the Five Banded Barb, a minimum tank size of 60 liters is recommended. They are schooling fish, so keeping them in groups of at least six is ideal for their wellbeing. The aquarium should have plenty of plants and open swimming spaces.
Feeding: Their diet is omnivorous, consisting of high-quality flake food, small pellets, as well as live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms for variety and optimal health.
Lifespan: In a well-maintained aquarium, the Five Banded Barb can live up to 5 years.
Behavior and Personality: Five Banded Barbs are peaceful, social, and active fish. They are best kept in groups where they exhibit schooling behavior. They are not aggressive but can be fin nippers if kept with long-finned species.
