The Antilles Pinktoe Tarantula, or Martinique Pinktoe, scientifically known as Caribena (ex. Avicularia) versicolor, is a visually stunning and popular species in the tarantula hobby. Native to the Caribbean, particularly the Antilles islands, this tarantula is renowned for its vibrant coloration and arboreal lifestyle. Juveniles display a bright blue color, which gradually transforms into a mix of green, blue, and purple with a characteristic pinkish hue on the toes in adults. The Antilles Pinktoe is part of the 'New World' tarantulas, known for their more docile nature and urticating hairs, which they use as a defense mechanism.

Origin:

The Antilles Pinktoe is native to the Caribbean islands, particularly the Antilles. They are found in tropical rainforest environments, where they reside in trees and shrubs.

Temperature:

The ideal temperature range for this species is between 75-85°F (24-29°C), with a high humidity level of around 70-80%. These conditions replicate their natural rainforest habitat.

Housing:

A vertical terrarium is suitable for the Antilles Pinktoe, providing plenty of height for climbing. Include branches, plants, or other structures for climbing and webbing. The substrate should retain some moisture to help maintain humidity.

Feeding:

Their diet typically consists of insects like crickets, roaches, and occasionally small moths or flying insects. Feeding should be done 2-3 times a week, depending on the tarantula's size and appetite.

Lifespan:

In captivity, these tarantulas can live for about 10-12 years, with females often living longer than males.

Behavior and Personality:

The Antilles Pinktoe Tarantula is known for its relatively calm and docile nature, making it a suitable choice for beginners. They are more likely to retreat or use their urticating hairs when threatened, rather than bite. Their active climbing and stunning colors make them an attractive display species.
