Ficus carica 'Rouge de Bordeaux' is a popular fig tree cultivar that is well-suited for growing in the UK and Ireland. It produces sweet, juicy figs with a deep red flesh that are excellent for eating fresh or using in desserts. The tree itself is small to medium-sized, making it ideal for gardens with limited space, and has a beautiful architectural form with attractive, deeply-lobed leaves. In addition to its edible fruits, 'Rouge de Bordeaux' is also prized for its ornamental value, adding texture and interest to borders or mixed planting schemes.

Why we like it:

  • Produces delicious, high-quality figs with a rich, complex flavour
  • Compact size and attractive form make it suitable for a wide range of garden settings
  • Provides both ornamental and edible value

What to know:

  • Plant in a sunny, sheltered position with well-draining soil
  • Regular watering is essential, particularly during hot, dry weather
  • Figs are produced on the previous year's growth, so pruning should be done in late winter or early spring
  • Fruiting typically begins in mid to late summer, with a second, smaller crop in autumn
  • Protect the tree from frost in colder regions, either by covering with horticultural fleece or growing in a pot that can be moved indoors during the winter months

Height and Spread:

  • Height: 2-3m
  • Spread: 2-3m
