Echium pininana, commonly known as Giant Viper's Bugloss or Tree Echium, is a stunning biennial or short-lived perennial that originates from the Canary Islands. It is prized for its impressive height and dramatic flower spikes, which can reach up to 4 meters tall when in full bloom. The plant produces a dense rosette of large, hairy leaves in its first year, and in the second year, it sends up a towering spike covered in thousands of small, blue or purple funnel-shaped flowers. These flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.

Why we like it

  • Dramatic height and impressive flower spikes
  • Attracts bees and other pollinators
  • Adds a bold, architectural element to gardens

What to know

  • Prefers full sun
  • Thrives in well-drained soil, ideally sandy or gravelly
  • Tolerant of drought once established
  • May require protection from frost in colder climates
  • Can self-seed freely if conditions are suitable

Flower Colour Blue or purple

Flowering months May, June, July

Height and Spread Up to 4 meters high and 1-2 meters spread

Echium pininana is a dramatic and eye-catching addition to any garden, particularly in coastal or Mediterranean-style gardens. Its towering flower spikes and ability to attract pollinators make it a standout feature that adds height and interest to garden landscapes. However, it requires a sunny, sheltered spot and may need winter protection in cooler climates.
