The Black Widow Tetra, also known as the Black Skirt Tetra, is a popular freshwater fish among hobbyists. Its body is mostly black, with a small patch of white on its underside. They are relatively easy to care for, making them a good choice for beginners. Black Widow Tetras are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals. They are active swimmers and require plenty of open swimming space in their aquarium. They also appreciate plenty of plants and hiding spots to retreat to when they feel threatened.
Feeding Black Widow Tetras are omnivorous and will eat a variety of foods, including flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. It's important to offer a varied diet to ensure that they receive all the necessary nutrients.
Special Requirements Black Widow Tetras prefer slightly acidic water with a pH range between 6.0 and 7.5. They are hardy fish and can tolerate a wide range of water conditions, but sudden changes in water parameters should be avoided. They also prefer a well-filtered aquarium with plenty of hiding places and plants.
Ideal Aquarium Size A school of six to eight Black Widow Tetras requires an aquarium with a minimum size of 75 liters (20 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and ensure good water quality.
Temperament Black Widow Tetras are generally peaceful and make good community fish, but they can become slightly territorial during breeding periods. It's important to provide plenty of hiding spaces and plants to diffuse any aggressive behavior.
Adult size Black Widow Tetras reach an adult size of around 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) in length.
