Sterba's Corydoras, scientifically named Corydoras sterbai, is a highly sought-after species in the aquarium hobby, renowned for its attractive appearance and endearing behavior. This species stands out with its distinct coloration: a dark body speckled with white dots and a lighter underbelly, complemented by orange markings on its head and fins. They typically grow to about 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) in length. Like other Corydoras, Sterba's Corydoras have a stout body, flattened underside, and are armored with bony plates. They are equipped with barbels near their mouths, which they use for foraging in the substrate.
Origin: Sterba's Corydoras is native to South America, primarily found in the upper Rio Guaporé and Rio Madeira basins in Bolivia and Brazil. They inhabit freshwater environments with soft, acidic water.
Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Sterba's Corydoras is between 22°C and 28°C (72°F to 82°F).
Water Quality: They thrive in a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 and prefer soft water. Consistent water quality and cleanliness are crucial for their health.
Aquarium Size: A minimum tank size of 60 liters is recommended for a group of Sterba's Corydoras. They are social fish and should be kept in groups of at least five or more to promote natural behavior and reduce stress. The tank should have a soft, sandy substrate to protect their sensitive barbels.
Feeding: Sterba's Corydoras are omnivorous. They should be fed a varied diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets or tablets, along with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
Lifespan: In a well-maintained aquarium, Sterba's Corydoras can live for about 5 years or more.
Behavior and Personality: These fish are peaceful, sociable, and active bottom dwellers. They are often seen scavenging for food or playfully interacting with each other. Sterba's Corydoras are suitable for community tanks with other peaceful fish.
