The Tiger Silver Dollar (Metynnis fasciatus) is an attractive and unique freshwater fish, renowned for its distinct, striped appearance that resembles the fur of a tiger. This species is relatively peaceful and grows to an average size of around 15 centimeters (6 inches), making it a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts. The Tiger Silver Dollar is an omnivore, and in the wild, it feeds on a mix of plant matter and small insects. It is known for its schooling behavior and is best kept in groups, which helps reduce stress and allows for a more natural social environment. This species is particularly noted for its hardiness and adaptability, making it suitable for a range of aquarium setups. However, they do require a spacious tank to accommodate their active swimming behavior and schooling nature.

Origin: The Tiger Silver Dollar is native to the river basins of South America, particularly in Brazil.

Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Tiger Silver Dollars is between 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).

Feeding: A varied diet is crucial for the Tiger Silver Dollar. They should be fed a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and vegetable matter.

Water Quality: The ideal pH level for Tiger Silver Dollars ranges from 6.0 to 7.5, with a water hardness of 5-19 dGH.

Ideal Aquarium Size: Tiger Silver Dollars thrive in a spacious aquarium, ideally starting at 200 liters (around 53 gallons). They need plenty of swimming space and a well-planted tank with open areas. A secure lid is recommended as they can jump.

Lifespan: With proper care, Tiger Silver Dollars can live up to 10 years in captivity.

Community Tank Compatibility: They are generally peaceful and can be kept with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Avoid keeping them with very small or fin-nipping species.

Breeding: Breeding Tiger Silver Dollars can be challenging. They require a large, well-planted tank with soft, slightly acidic water. Spawning is more likely to occur in groups. Eggs are scattered and parental care is not provided.
