The Geophagus Brasiliensis, also known as the Pearl Cichlid or Brazilian Eartheater, is a vibrant and increasingly popular freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby. This species is part of the Geophagus genus, noted for their unique substrate-sifting behavior. The Pearl Cichlid is characterized by its robust, laterally compressed body and can display a range of colors from greens and blues to reds and yellows, often with a pearlescent sheen, which becomes more pronounced during spawning. They are relatively peaceful fish but can show territorial behavior, especially during breeding.
Origin: Geophagus Brasiliensis is native to South America, predominantly found in the coastal rivers of Brazil, hence its name.
Temperature: The ideal temperature range for maintaining Geophagus Brasiliensis is between 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).
Water Quality: These fish prefer a pH range of 6.0 to 7.8 and thrive in soft to medium-hard water conditions.
Aquarium Size: A minimum tank size of 200 liters is advisable for Geophagus Brasiliensis. They require space to swim and sift through the substrate, along with areas for hiding. A sandy substrate is preferred to facilitate their natural sifting behavior.
Feeding: Geophagus Brasiliensis are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet including high-quality pellets or flakes, along with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms. Vegetable matter can also be included to provide a balanced diet.
Lifespan: With proper care, these fish can live for about 10 years, making them a long-term commitment for aquarium enthusiasts.
Behavior and Personality: While generally peaceful, they can be territorial, especially during breeding. They are best housed with other similarly sized and tempered fish. Their eartheating behavior is fascinating to watch and is a highlight of their care.
