The Forktail Rainbowfish, scientifically known as Popondetta furcata, is a captivating and vibrant species popular among aquarium enthusiasts. These small, elegantly colored fish display a remarkable blend of iridescent hues, with males often showcasing more intense coloration, especially during spawning. They typically grow up to 5 cm in length and are known for their peaceful temperament, making them an excellent choice for community aquariums. Forktail Rainbowfish are active swimmers and exhibit a playful demeanor, often seen darting around in the aquarium. They thrive in an environment that mimics their natural habitat, which includes well-planted areas with ample swimming space. Due to their sociable nature, they are best kept in groups, where their dynamic schooling behavior can be fully appreciated.

Origin: Forktail Rainbowfish originate from Papua New Guinea, specifically in the region's freshwater streams and rivers.

Temperature: The ideal temperature for Forktail Rainbowfish is between 24°C to 28°C.

Feeding: These fish are omnivorous and should be fed a varied diet that includes high-quality flake food, small granules, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae.

Water Quality: Forktail Rainbowfish prefer a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5 and a water hardness between 5 to 12 dGH.

Ideal Aquarium Size: A minimum tank size of 75 liters is recommended for Forktail Rainbowfish. The aquarium should be well-planted with open areas for swimming and a gentle current. They appreciate a setup with subdued lighting and a dark substrate, which helps to showcase their colors.

Lifespan: The average lifespan of Forktail Rainbowfish is around 5 to 8 years, provided they are kept in optimal conditions.

Community Tank Compatibility: Forktail Rainbowfish are peaceful and suitable for community tanks. They get along well with other small, peaceful fish and are best kept in groups of their own kind to encourage natural behavior.

Breeding: Breeding Forktail Rainbowfish is moderately easy. They are egg scatterers and do not exhibit parental care. A separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop is recommended. Eggs typically hatch within 7 to 10 days, and the fry should be fed with infusoria or finely crushed flake food.
