The Straight Horned Baboon Tarantula, known scientifically as Ceratogyrus marshalli, is a remarkable and distinctive species within the tarantula community. This species is particularly known for its unique physical characteristic: a straight, horn-like projection on its carapace. Native to southern Africa, the Straight Horned Baboon Tarantula is a part of the 'Old World' tarantulas, recognized for their more potent venom and defensive nature. The species displays a color palette typically consisting of earthy browns and grays, aiding in camouflage in its natural habitat. Due to their temperament, they are more suited to experienced tarantula keepers.

Origin:

Ceratogyrus marshalli is native to southern Africa, particularly adapted to dry and semi-arid regions. They are often found in burrows, which they construct in the ground.

Temperature:

The ideal temperature range for this species is between 75-85°F (24-29°C), with a humidity level of around 40-50%. These conditions mimic the drier climates of their natural habitats.

Housing:

A terrarium for a Straight Horned Baboon should include a deep substrate for burrowing, as they are a fossorial species. The enclosure should also provide hiding places and a water dish. It's important to ensure the enclosure is secure, as tarantulas can be escape artists.

Feeding:

Their diet typically consists of insects such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Feeding should be done once or twice a week, adjusting based on the tarantula's size and appetite.

Lifespan:

In captivity, Straight Horned Baboon Tarantulas can live for several years, with females generally outliving males. Proper care and a suitable environment can significantly contribute to their longevity.

Behavior and Personality:

Ceratogyrus marshalli is known for its defensive behavior and can be quick to show aggression when threatened. They are not recommended for handling due to their quick reflexes and the potency of their venom.
