The Black Widow Tetra, scientifically known as Gymnocorymbus ternetzi, is a popular freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby, known for its striking appearance and lively nature. This species is characterized by its silvery body with a distinctive black marking that extends from the dorsal fin to the tail, resembling the hourglass marking of a black widow spider, hence its name. They typically grow to about 5 to 6 cm (2 to 2.5 inches) in length. Black Widow Tetras are schooling fish and are known for their active swimming behavior, making them a lively addition to any community aquarium.
Origin: Black Widow Tetras are native to South America, particularly found in the Paraguay and Guaporé River basins.
Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Black Widow Tetras is between 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).
Water Quality: These tetras thrive in a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5 and prefer soft to moderately hard water.
Aquarium Size: A minimum tank size of 60 liters is recommended, as Black Widow Tetras are active swimmers and do best in groups. The tank should be well-planted with space for swimming.
Feeding: Their diet should include a mix of high-quality flakes or pellets, along with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia for variety.
Lifespan: With proper care, Black Widow Tetras can live for about 3 to 5 years.
Behavior and Personality: They are generally peaceful but can be nippy with long-finned fish. Best kept in schools of six or more, their schooling behavior is a highlight of their care. They are suitable for community tanks with other similarly sized and tempered species.
