The Common Goldfish is a smaller variety of the goldfish species and is known for its hardiness and adaptability, making it an ideal pet for both novice and experienced fish keepers. Recognized for its vibrant orange or golden color, the common goldfish lacks the fancy finnage and unique body shapes of its fancier cousins but makes up for it with its classic, streamlined appearance.
Aquarium Size:
For a small common goldfish, a minimum tank size of 75 liters is recommended. This size allows enough space for the fish to grow and swim comfortably, as goldfish are known to produce a significant amount of waste which can quickly degrade water quality in smaller tanks.
Feeding:
Their diet should include high-quality goldfish flakes or pellets as a base, supplemented with vegetables like peas and leafy greens, and occasional protein-rich treats like brine shrimp or bloodworms. It is crucial to avoid overfeeding as goldfish can easily become overweight and suffer from health issues as a result.
Lifespan:
In a well-maintained aquarium, common goldfish can live for 10 to 15 years, with some individuals reaching 20 years or more.
Community Tank Compatibility:
Common Goldfish are peaceful and can be kept with other goldfish of similar size. However, they should not be housed with small, delicate fish or tropical species that require warmer water.
Breeding:
Breeding common goldfish can be challenging in a home aquarium. They are group spawners and require specific conditions, including a large enough space and changes in temperature to simulate natural breeding cues.
