The Mexican Redknee tarantula (Brachypelma smithi) is a popular pet among tarantula enthusiasts. This species is known for its striking appearance, with its jet-black body and bright orange-red knees. They are relatively docile and make a great choice for first-time tarantula owners. Mexican Redknees are also long-lived, with a lifespan of up to 20 years in captivity.
Origin: Mexican Redknee tarantulas are native to the Pacific coast of Mexico.
Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Mexican Redknee tarantulas is between 24°C to 27°C (75°F to 81°F).
Housing: A basic setup for a Mexican Redknee tarantula would include a 10-gallon terrarium with a secure lid, a substrate of coconut fiber or vermiculite, a hide, and a shallow water dish. The enclosure should also have good ventilation and be kept out of direct sunlight.
Feeding: Mexican Redknee tarantulas are carnivorous and eat a diet of live insects such as crickets, mealworms, and roaches. They should be fed once or twice a week, depending on their size and activity level.
Lifespan: In captivity, Mexican Redknee tarantulas can live up to 20 years with proper care.
Behavior and Personality: Mexican Redknee tarantulas are generally docile and easy to handle. They are not aggressive and rarely bite, making them a great pet for beginners. However, they can be skittish and may flick urticating hairs if they feel threatened. They are also known to be active and will often come out of their hides to explore their enclosure.
