The Tiger Platy, scientifically known as Xiphophorus maculatus, is a popular freshwater fish among aquarium enthusiasts. This vibrant and colorful species is named for its striking tiger-like patterns that adorn its body, making it a visually appealing addition to any aquarium. Originating from Central America, particularly Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala, the Tiger Platy is often found in slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters, which influence its care requirements.

Origin: The Tiger Platy hails from the warm waters of Central America, predominantly inhabiting regions in Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.

Temperature: To ensure the well-being of Tiger Platys, maintain an aquarium temperature between 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).

Feeding: Tiger Platys are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet. Their nutrition can consist of high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with live or frozen treats such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Incorporating a mix of foods will keep them healthy and vibrant.

Water Quality: Maintain a slightly alkaline to neutral pH level, ideally around 7.0 to 7.8, and moderate water hardness between 10 to 20 dGH. Ensuring good filtration and regular water changes will help maintain these parameters.

Ideal Aquarium Size: For a school of Tiger Platys, consider an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 75 liters (20 gallons). Adequate space allows them to swim freely and reduces territorial disputes. Provide ample hiding places and live plants for added security and comfort.

Lifespan: With proper care, Tiger Platys can live for approximately 3 to 5 years, making them a relatively long-lived fish in the aquarium hobby.

Community Tank Compatibility: Tiger Platys are known for their peaceful nature, making them excellent additions to community tanks. They coexist harmoniously with other peaceful species like guppies, tetras, and Corydoras. However, avoid pairing them with aggressive or fin-nipping fish to prevent stress and injury.

Breeding: Breeding Tiger Platys is relatively straightforward. To encourage breeding, provide ample hiding spots, like dense plants, within the aquarium. The females are livebearers, giving birth to fry rather than laying eggs. Once pregnant, a female will release live fry after a gestation period of about a month. Separate the fry from the adults or provide floating vegetation to protect them from being eaten by other tank inhabitants.

Please note: We don't ship live animals. You can order online and choose click and collect, and we will hold it for you.
