  • Species Overview: The Giant Vietnam Mantis, scientifically known as Phasmomantella sp “Vietnam”, is a captivating insect species native to the tropical forests of Vietnam. Known for its agile movements and distinctive appearance, the Vietnam Mantis is relatively new species for enthusiasts and makes for a fascinating pet.

  • Appearance: This mantis species is known for it's large size, reaching 12-15cm as adults. They are found in various shades of green or brown, with the females generally having more of the green colouration.

  • Behavior: The Vietnam Mantis is an active predator and highly efficient hunter. Its diet primarily consists of live insects such as crickets, flies, and small roaches. This species is known for its patience, often remaining perfectly still while waiting to ambush prey. Although generally calm and non-aggressive towards humans, the mantis can display defensive behaviors, such as raising its forelegs and spreading its wings to appear larger when threatened.

  • Habitat Requirements: To replicate its natural habitat, provide the Vietnam Mantis with a vertically oriented enclosure that offers plenty of climbing space. A terrarium with a minimum size of 12 x 12 x 18 inches is recommended. Include branches, twigs, and artificial plants for climbing and hiding. Maintain a temperature range of 25-26 degrees Celsius and a humidity level of around 70-80%, which can be achieved through regular misting.

  • Diet: The Vietnam Mantis thrives on a diet of live insects. Feed it appropriately sized prey, such as crickets, fruit flies, and small roaches. Adult mantises can be fed every 2-3 days, while juveniles may require more frequent feeding.

  • Lifespan: In captivity, the Vietnam Mantis typically lives for about 8-12 months, depending on factors such as diet, environment, and overall care. Females generally have a slightly longer lifespan than males.

  • Care and Maintenance: Regularly clean the enclosure to remove uneaten prey and waste to prevent mold and bacteria growth. Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain air quality and prevent excess humidity. Provide a shallow water dish or mist the enclosure regularly to keep the mantis hydrated.

The Vietnam Mantis is an intriguing and low-maintenance pet that offers a unique opportunity to observe the behaviors and life cycle of a praying mantis up close. Its active hunting style and relatively simple care requirements make it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced insect keepers.
