Azolla caroliniana is a small, floating fern that forms a dense mat on the surface of still or slow-moving water. Its tiny, green, heart-shaped leaves are paired along branching stems, and it produces small, inconspicuous flowers. It is a suitable plant for Irish ponds and can help to reduce nutrient levels and improve water quality. In addition, it can provide shelter for small aquatic animals and a breeding ground for insects.
Why we like it:
- Can help to improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients
- Provides a habitat for small aquatic animals and insects
- Can help to reduce algae growth
What to know:
- Azolla caroliniana is a fast-growing plant that can quickly cover the surface of a pond
- It prefers still or slow-moving water and does not do well in areas with strong currents
- May need to be thinned out occasionally to prevent it from completely covering the surface of the water
- Does not tolerate freezing temperatures and may need to be brought indoors during the winter in colder climates
- Does not require fertilizer or special care, but will benefit from occasional removal of dead or dying leaves
