The larger wolf spiders native to Central Europe, like most species in this family, live in burrows in the ground, which they line from the inside with spider silk, similar to the wallpaper or trapdoor spiders. Most other species live in the herbaceous layer or between stones, where they create living webs. At night they leave the hiding place and go hunting: They wait in favorable places for an insect to pass by. The wolf spider rushes forward from a few centimeters away and grabs the prey.
