Galanthus Elwesii, commonly known as the Giant Snowdrop or Elwes's Snowdrop, heralds the end of winter with its delicate, drooping white flowers. Native to the woodlands of southwest Turkey, this variety of snowdrop is larger than many of its counterparts. The inner petals feature a distinct green marking, and the broad, glaucous leaves set it apart. This snowdrop not only stands out because of its size but also its subtle fragrance, which is especially noticeable on warmer winter days.

Why We Like It

  • Early bloomer, signaling the upcoming arrival of spring.
  • Subtle fragrance adds an unexpected delight in the winter garden.
  • Larger flowers and broad leaves make for a distinctive appearance among snowdrops.

What to Know

  • Thrives in well-draining, humus-rich soil.
  • Plant bulbs in a partially shaded spot, mimicking their native woodland habitat.
  • Water regularly but ensure the soil doesn't become waterlogged.
  • Once flowering concludes, let the leaves die down naturally, as this feeds the bulb for the next season.
  • Watch for potential pests like slugs and the occasional squirrel, which may dig up bulbs.

Planting Month September to November.

Flower Colour White with distinctive green markings on the inner petals.

Flowering Months January to March, often one of the first flowers to bloom in the new year.

Height and Spread Height: 15-20 cm. Spread: 5-8 cm.
