Dryopteris filix-mas 'Linearis Polydactila', commonly known as the 'Fern Linearis', is a hardy deciduous fern native to Europe, Asia, and North America. The fronds of this fern are long, narrow and delicate, with a deep green colour that looks great in any shady spot. As the name suggests, the fronds are 'linear' in shape, which means they are longer than they are wide. 'Polydactila' refers to the fact that the fronds are often 'fingered,' which means they have more than one blade, giving them a lacy, delicate appearance.

Why we like it:

  • Low maintenance, once established it requires very little care.
  • The lacy fronds add texture and movement to any garden bed.
  • This fern can thrive in various lighting conditions, making it versatile in garden design.

What to know:

  • Plant it in well-draining soil, rich in organic matter.
  • Water the fern regularly, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
  • Dryopteris filix-mas 'Linearis Polydactila' prefers partial to full shade, and it is tolerant of dry soils.
  • Cut back the old fronds in the late winter or early spring to encourage new growth.
  • The fern is hardy and can withstand winter temperatures down to -20 °C.

Height and Spread:

  • When fully grown, Dryopteris filix-mas 'Linearis Polydactila' can reach a height of 60 cm and a spread of 45 cm.
