The Bronze Corydoras, scientifically named Corydoras aeneus, is a popular freshwater fish in the aquarium trade, cherished for its charming behavior and adaptability. This species, commonly known as the Bronze Cory or Green Cory, displays a bronze to greenish body coloration with a shimmering iridescence, which becomes more pronounced under proper lighting. They typically reach a size of about 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) in length. Known for their peaceful nature and distinctive armored plates, Bronze Corydoras have a stout body with a flattened underside, which is ideal for bottom dwelling. They are equipped with barbels near their mouth to help them forage for food in the substrate.
Origin: Bronze Corydoras are native to South America, widely distributed in freshwater habitats across countries like Colombia, Peru, and Brazil. They are found in a variety of water bodies, including slow-moving rivers, streams, and ponds.
Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Bronze Corydoras is between 22°C and 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
Water Quality: They thrive in a pH range of 6.0 to 7.8, with soft to moderately hard water. Consistent water quality and cleanliness are essential for their well-being.
Aquarium Size: A minimum tank size of 60 liters is recommended for keeping a small group of Bronze Corydoras. They are social fish and should be kept in groups of at least five to promote natural behavior and reduce stress. The tank should have a soft, sandy substrate to protect their sensitive barbels.
Feeding: Their diet is omnivorous. They do well with high-quality sinking pellets or tablets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia for variety.
Lifespan: Bronze Corydoras can live for about 5 years or more in a well-maintained aquarium.
Behavior and Personality: They are peaceful, social, and active, often seen scavenging the bottom of the tank. Bronze Corydoras are well-suited for community tanks and are known for their playful interactions with each other and other peaceful tank mates.
