Athyrium filix-femina, commonly known as lady fern, is a graceful and delicate fern with bright green fronds that can reach up to 90cm in length. Its feathery leaves make it an excellent choice for adding texture and movement to a shady spot in the garden. Lady fern is a native to Ireland and can be found in woodlands, wet meadows, and along river banks. In the garden, it prefers moist, humus-rich soil and partial shade to full shade. Its fronds emerge in spring and stay attractive throughout the growing season, turning golden-yellow in autumn.
Why we like it:
- Lady fern is easy to grow and requires little maintenance.
- Its soft and elegant appearance adds a lovely texture and movement to the garden.
- It is a great choice for adding height to a shady border or for softening the edges of a pond or water feature.
What to know:
- Lady fern prefers moist, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
- It can tolerate full shade but will grow better in partial shade with some morning or late afternoon sun.
- It is drought-tolerant once established, but will appreciate regular watering during dry spells.
- Lady fern can be divided every 2-3 years in early spring or early autumn to promote healthy growth.
- It is generally free from pests and diseases, but may be susceptible to rust in wet weather.
Height and Spread:
- Lady fern can reach a height of up to 90cm and a spread of up to 60cm when fully grown.
