The Lionhead Ranchu is a distinctive and highly prized variety of fancy goldfish, renowned for its unique appearance and charming demeanor. This breed is characterized by its prominent "lionhead" - a large, fleshy growth known as a wen, which covers its head and gill plates, giving it a distinctive, almost lion-like appearance. The Ranchu lacks a dorsal fin, contributing to its rounded, egg-shaped body and creating a smooth back line. This breed comes in various colors, including red, gold, white, and combinations thereof. Due to their specialized body shape and delicate features, Lionhead Ranchus require careful maintenance and are often favored by more experienced aquarists.
Origin: The Lionhead Ranchu originated in China but was further developed in Japan. It is highly revered in Japanese culture, often considered the "king of goldfish."
Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Lionhead Ranchus is between 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F).
Water Quality: They prefer a pH range of 6.0 to 8.0 and thrive in soft to medium-hard water. Good water quality and regular water changes are crucial due to their sensitivity to poor conditions.
Aquarium Size: A minimum tank size of 75 liters is recommended for a single Lionhead Ranchu. The aquarium should be spacious with a gentle filtration system to accommodate their swimming needs and reduce the risk of damaging their delicate wen.
Feeding: Their diet should consist of high-quality goldfish pellets or flakes, supplemented with vegetables and occasional protein sources like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
Lifespan: With proper care, Lionhead Ranchus can live for about 10 to 15 years.
Behavior and Personality: Lionhead Ranchus are known for their peaceful and friendly nature. They are slow and graceful swimmers and do well in a tank with other gentle goldfish varieties. Their unique appearance and amiable behavior make them a cherished addition to any goldfish collection.
